Spring is often associated with de-cluttering your home and freshening up your environment but the season of renewal also provides the perfect opportunity to detox impurities from our skin and body.

What is a skin and body Detox?  Detox, short for detoxification, is the process that results in the elimination of toxins and impurities from the body.  Detoxing helps correct the ravages of prolonged environmental stress on the skin that can cause acne, premature ageing, dryness or irritation, leaving it refreshed and renewed.  If going through a “process” sounds scary, don’t worry – improved health and radiant skin can be achieved by following a few simple steps.

(1) Liver friendly organic diet for 4 weeks:   Start the day with a fresh vegetable juice or green smoothie. For lunch and dinner, choose a vegetarian protein such as legumes, beans, tofu or tempeh.  Include fresh salad or steamed vegetables plus nuts/seeds and an organic wholegrain such as brown rice, quinoa, millet or rye. Adequate fluid is vital for maintaining skin hydration and carrying away wastes during a detox, ensure you drink about 2 litres per day. Fluid doesn’t just have to be water, herbal teas support digestion and the elimination organs – particularly the skin.  Click through to our Pinterest board for recipe ideas.

(2) Regular exercise = 30 minutes at least 3 times per week:   Exercise improves digestion and elimination, increases endurance and energy levels, promotes lean body mass while burning fat, decreases cholesterol, reduces stress and anxiety and elevates mood.

(3) Positive thinking: We’ve all heard about the power of meditation – it can ease depression, improve mental functioning, and reduce stress/anxiety. It also reduces a different kind of toxin – negative thought patterns that detrimentally influence our physical chemistry.  By re-directing our attention to our body and breath we reclaim wasted negative energy  and increase our wellbeing.

(4) Organic skincare cleanse: The latest detox trend is dry body brushing and as the name suggests it should be done before getting wet. It is intended for the whole body, except your face. Make sure that you use a brush with soft and natural bristles. Start at your toes—brush with sweeping strokes toward your heart which encourages blood and lymphatic flow.  Less effective, but still beneficial and perhaps more practical given our busy lifestyles, is to use a loofah in the shower replicating the long upward stroke movements of dry brushing

Detoxing your facial skin requires a gentler approach.  It is important to shed dead surface cells from true living skin beneath via exfoliation to enable wastes and impurities to eliminate without causing breakouts (if the escape route is blocked a pimple will form).  Use  Pure & Green organics Exfoliate to match your skin type twice per week during detox (revert to once per week after your 4 week detox regime).  My personal favourite is exfoliate citrus with coffee beans, it leaves my skin perfectly polished and the coffee aroma is invigorating.

After exfoliating, apply a masque to remove deeper wastes and toxins from facial skin. During September/October 2012 spend $50 or more on products  in the Pure & Green range and receive a 100ml exfoliate with 20g masque sample FREE as a gift with your purchase.  Pure & Green organics Complexion Boosting Masques contain cocoa powder and green tea both rich in polyphenols and bioflavonoids that act as natural skin smoothers.  Other key ingredients include brown seaweed extract, clinically proven to reduce wrinkles and various clays to draw oil and toxins from the skin while restoring minerals and trace elements.
