Age Spots: are flat brown spots that can appear on the body as it ages, particularly common after a person reaches the age of forty.  Most appear on the face, neck and hands – the areas that are exposed to the most sun.  The brown spots are created by a pigment called lipofuscin a waste product from free radical damage on skin cells.

Contributing factors : (1) Sun exposure, (2) the lighter your skin tone the greater likelihood of age spots  as your  melanin levels are not high enough to counter the adverse effects of the UV rays from the sun, (3) a nutrient deficiency that prevented your body from repairing itself after sun exposure.

What to do:

(1) Limit your time in the sun avoiding the hours of 10am-2 pm when the UV count is highest,

(2) use SPF30 sunblock,

(3) Glutathione is an incredibly strong antioxidant your liver produces to prevent free radical damage.  If not corrected a lack of glutathione will accelerate the aging process so here’s how you get some.  This is a case of “we can’t take it so we’ve got to make it”. As oral supplementation has little effect due to poor assimilation, you need to help your body make its own glutathione.  To do this, your body requires three amino acids – cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine.   Spirulina and Chlorella are an excellent source of these amino acids and also include specific vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support healthy skin and decrease age spots.  I recommend the Synergy Natural brand (www.synergynatural.com.au).   To support your liver in its glutathione production drink at least 8 glasses of water or herbal tea a day and keep  caffeine, alcohol, saturated fats and sugar to a minimum.

Topical skincare treatment

Cleansing with a gentle pH balanced product like Pure & Green’s “organic facial cleanser” that won’t dry out your skin or strip your essential fatty acids.  Rinse with a lemon water (add 1 tsp organic lemon juice to 500ml water).  The lemon water rinse also helps fade out the age spots.

Exfoliate skin on a regular basis – once per week is recommended. Exfoliation removes dead and damaged skin cells and will not only give you a more radiant complexion but effectively aids your body in the removal of wastes.  Try Pure & Green’s “organic exfoliate” to suit your skin type.  Use an antioxidant rich masque at least once per week following exfoliation.  Antioxidants  brighten your complexion, help fade out age spots and increase circulation.

Topical application of omega 3, 6 and 9 rich oils has proven skin benefits, so add a few drops of Pure &Green’s “organic age defense serum” to your moisturiser each evening. Apply one pump of your moisturiser into the palm of your hand, add 2 pumps of the serum, mix, and then apply to your facial skin and décolletage.  The results will impress you!
